SOME WORDS FROM THE LABEL

Serena-Maneesh to release double album of early material on Smalltown Supersound.

Most of the material on this double album was released as two EPs prior to the debut album; ¨Zuruck¨ and ¨Fixxations¨, both on Honeymilk, covering the time 1999-2003. Due to the fact that the label didn't have distribution outside of Norway the material never got released outside of country. This is another reason why the band and the label want to make this release spectacular and give as much as possible to the fans while waiting on the band's new studio album.

SM leader, Emil Nikolaisen and Smalltown founder Joakim Haugland have known each other for years, coming from two small neighbouring towns in the south of Norway, Moi and Flekkefjord. They have long wanted to collaborate on something, and the release of SM Backwards was the perfect opportunity.

Serena-Maneesh "SM Bacwards" will be released worldwide on double CD and vinyl the 3rd of May 2008. The artwork for the album is made by Kim Hiorthøy.

Some words from Serena`s Emil Nikolaisen about the release:
What started as a little collection of basement sessions from around town, previously just released as two single eps domesticly or as import only, kinda really got out of control.. digging out the old reels with mixes and different versions, listening back to raw tracks is never a good idea- of course i wanted to hear it differently.. And then all these great re-mixing that was never published in any form before. Compiling it all, we really went overboard and it got ridiculous.. the liner notes coming out even more pretentious. Just like we like it. Embracing the S-M universe with pieces, fragments, failure and treasure hand in hand, all the scattered ideas from even pre- Serena moniker time, pointing to what later came to be the mad little rat scene that is today. Just as much as capturing the way up till now, it re-evokes all the crazy moments of this time. I just went back to the moorlands of "Spendless" yesterday, the "studio" we did most of the sessions. The room still got this eccentric, thought provoking, wonderful mid- range eq- triggering and equally beautiful mould stench- that I, for a longer period would inhabit. REFRESHING again! I put on a reel of demos for the full length that we did later and you know.. that feeling of being a kid again, walking in unknown, prohibited territory-- gives me glimpses of hope even for the next one! Like før jul i fjor gikk Marius Bodin Larsen bort. Han får vi ikke tilbake. Men en stor del av ham finnes fortsatt. Han finnes i minnene, og i musikken han var sterkt delaktig i å få ut i verden. Størst spor satte han etter seg med arbeidet i studioet Crystal Canyon. Der satte han sine fingeravtrykk på noe av den beste musikken som er laget her til lands de siste årene. Med sin musikalske teft, sin romantiske holdning til faget og selve livet i studioet, klargjorde hans tekniske fingre rom for toneangivende rockmusikerne fra en hel generasjon. Han var aldri sen om å legge inn ekstra arbeidstimer, eller døgn for den saks skyld, for å få det optimale ut av opptakene. Med denne innlevelsen ga han musikerne han samarbeidet med den selvtilliten de trengte for å prestere sitt ypperste, for å bruke sportsrevy-sjargong. Men musikk er ikke idrett, det er formidling av MAGIC. Og Marius Bodin Larsen la til rette for dette. Magic. we are deeply sad and heartbroken to announce the passing of dear companyon, collaborator, incredibly gentle and loving, the legend, genius (i RARELY use that word but just can' t keep it back right now right here), musical mentor, challenger, and as he came to be, close friend. there are no words to add right now. he made our days richer and we will notice as time go by how much he contributed of life and being. it was an honor to know this man. rest in peace, hope to see you again.

USA ROUNDUP

Coming down from 30,000 feet, curled in a chair with the new Almodovar film "Volver" playing on my small screen, sipping some vin rouge, with the Atlantic ocean suppressed beneath the mighty wings of an airplane.. the dark, inky sea stretching on into infinity, only broken up by scattered clouds and the random lights of ships.

Back to England.. back to the comforts of home.. out of a bus and into a stationary bed...proper meals and no carrying of equipment.. the silence of a room as opposed to the chaos of soundcheck.. and I am missing it slightly already..

The desert-scapes of Utah where the Navajo Indian villages appeared like speckles of paint on a canvass- so colourful and intimate. The long desolate stretched of Montana with spectacular mountains laying peaceful against fields of yellow grass and bushes. Seattle with the majestic waters passing out from beneath the Atheneum Bar where hot soup and cold beers were enjoyed on old wooden tables. Montreal and the wonderful streets of Toronto. Friends and pizza in Cambridge. More friends but no pizza in Minneapolis. Record stores in Portland. San Francisco with the blur of Cafe Roma, Chinatown and Bottom Of The Hill. Los Angeles with weird barbeques and Brian Jonestown shows. Pool parties and rooftop bliss in Phoenix. Discovery and amazement in New Orleans- peeling paint and wooden shutters. Texas with all her insanity treating us to both extremes. Atlanta, home to friends of Ann and hot showers. Small shops and organic food in the folds of Chapel Hill. Falls Church with a hot irish stew and late night drinks. Philadelphia, meeting up with Scott Hatch, Tom Roberton and his friend Sarah laden with La Chouffe's and other assorted delicacies. Then it all rolled back to the streets of Brooklyn, where the shows ended and the comedown started.... days of walking around New York.. visiting painters studios... having drinks with friends.. spending too much time at Motorcity with the legendary Harri, Eating fantastic creole food with Euvin in the lower east side, sitting on the expansive rooftop at Death By Audio while drinking hot coffee and taking photos with Tom, packing packing packing, and then suddenly, after all the long drives and short hello's it was time to go. Time to go back to a normal house and lead a normal life.. atleast for a short while.

America has treated us once again. Thank you all SO much for making this tour incredible, and possible.

Finally given a few moments to breathe at Vita's Cafe, I managed to update the dates with the various bands that will be sharing the stage with the mighty vikings.

Spent the last 29 hours driving from Minneapolis with our driver who drove the WHOLE way (1666 miles) in one go, without sleeping AT ALL... he stopped for coffee twice and just rolled through the night, through the vast eerie, trance-like state of Montana, through the flash sttorms of Western Minneapolis, and the brief sojourn through Idaho. Now we sit in silence and reflection in wonderful Seattle and take a few deep breaths before walkiing out into the sunlight to embrace the day full on the lips.

SUMMER GONE MAD

It's all headaches and insanity this part of the weird world.... drifting back and hurtling forward at intense speeds, spending days in the middle of nowhere norway, other days in the middle of manhatten, some days back in oslo having quiet pints and conversations, then shooting off at _____ kilometers an hour into the thick fog that sticks to trees at night to keep them warm, listening to music on ipods, eating crap motorway food, exploring Stockholm once again, finding the morning light over norwegian lakes to be spellbinding.....its already been an adventure and the summers not near over.
